Functions of the Council

As highlighted in its enabling Decree No.3 of 1975 amended by Decree No.5 of 1987, the statutory functions of the Council are:

• To promote and foster the appreciation, revival and development of Nigeria’s Arts and Culture.
• To plan and co-ordinate cultural activities and foster the development of Literary, Visual and Performing Arts in Nigeria.
• To organize and promote exhibitions in Arts and Crafts.
• To coordinate inter-state cultural exchange activities.
• To render assistance to states in the fields of Arts and Culture.
• To promote the development of music, traditional dance, drama, opera, cinema, film, photography, folklore, oral tradition, literature, poetry, painting and general arts, woodwork, embroidery, weaving and similar crafts.
• To establish with the approval of the Honuorable Minister, Culture Centres, Theatres, Galleries and Crafts centres for the promotion of Arts and Culture.
